Canyon

This washy and expressive multi-wall installation weaves local nature throughout a new campus and brings gesture and play to an otherwise right-angled space.

Our inspiration came directly from the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve, where oak woodlands and chaparral hills reveal subtle layers of texture, color, and movement.

We translated those canyon impressions into a series of hand-painted artworks in the studio—gestural watercolor washes and fast pencil lines to capture the lively spirit of the nearby canyon.

We then digitally layered these paintings to create compositions that were printed as multi-story mesh panels that wrap the building’s façade. Our four-part installation covers about a 60 foot x 460 foot area.

From a distance the structures shimmer with soft color and reflect in the walls of windows, and up close the loose marks bring a sense of the handmade.

Here’s the view from an interior office — an immersive perspective that shows how the painterly artwork animates the interior spaces as well.
