Estock Elementary

For our MuralKit at Estock Elementary we invited students and their families to participate in a day of mural painting.

Before the participants arrived, we mapped out the design using a numbering system. The mural came together quickly as painters of all ages began filling in color on the wall. The most engaged painters lingered to add finishing touches and fine details.

The design we created was based on the native garden at the school and the creatures it supports. Students will be able to observe in real life the flora and fauna they helped paint in the mural.

We composed the flora to show the seasonal cycle from spring blooms to autumn seeds, and included a central golden sun as a symbol of wholeness and warmth. A bright sky blue unifies the piece and makes the flowers pop.

This mural was truly a collaboration of all ages. The work of very young, less skillful hands was tidied up by older kids. While everyone was excited to do their part, a core group of artistically inclined students emerged as the day went on, and took pride in helping to finish the artwork beautifully. Some of the parents were among the most engaged, staying for hours to work on the piece. We supported the group with paint colors and gentle instruction, but the day unfolded organically and ended with a fully painted, beautiful wall.

“You have no idea the lasting, tender impact you left on our community. Following the storm this week, the sun came out. It was so bold and bright and I heard more than one student say “just like our mural!” We had an egret visit to the field before school and a group of kids observed it from a distance, their interest in nature and our surroundings heightened. This feels like the beginning of a beautiful transformation for our campus and I am indebted to both of you.Thank you for sharing your artistic and insightful gifts with us. I am so grateful for your inspirational contribution.”
