Garvey Intermediate

The MuralKit at Garvey Intermediate is an artistic extension of their campus jewel, a lush native garden. The space had been transformed from the all-too-familiar landscape of dead grass and invasive weeds, to a robust habitat complete with a vernal pool! Jesse Chang with Catalyst San Gabriel Valley is the maestro behind this incredible model of what a campus can be.

To design this MuralKit we wandered the garden, taking photos and looking at color swatches. The finished mural is delicate and interwoven, just like the garden.

We worked with the 8th grade advanced art class, leading them through the whole mural-painting process from gridding the wall, transferring the design, filling in, and adding finishing touches. Before each painting session we walked through the garden and looked at the plants we would be painting that day, taking in their forms, colors, and considering how they contribute to the composition of the artwork.

All of the flora and fauna depicted in the mural are species that can be observed within the immediate surrounding of the garden.

In addition to the mural the garden is also home to a Seed Spire. Several of the wildflower seed species included in the Seed Spire are depicted in the mural, including California poppies and tidy tips. The Seed Spire is cared for by the 8th grade Art Club.

“Garvey Intermediate is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Studio Tutto on our Garden Mural. Drawing inspiration from our natural garden, the artists have crafted a mural that showcases the natural beauty within our own garden. Our students are deeply appreciative to have the privilege of contributing to an artistic endeavor that will forever be a part of Garvey Intermediate, leaving a lasting mark on our school's legacy.”
