INTO SKY

Standing in a field in Irvine, CA with the Santa Ana Mountains in the distance, we watch a red-tailed hawk and two glossy black crows fly overhead. Over the course of our visit, we also see phoebes, chatty mockingbirds and warblers. These sightings become the beginning of a species list - birds to be translated into a collection of custom stamps for the new adjacent park.

The park’s centerpiece is a 3,000 square foot elevated deck. Views from atop the deck are expansive, while the space underneath offers a cool concrete refuge from the sun. We designed this collection of bird stamps to bring life and moments of contrast to the expanse of overhead concrete, below the deck. The imperfect texture of the stamps unifies the birds with the mottled concrete surface. The deep black stain brings a crispness and connects to black architectural features throughout the space.
